Reporting on a grant from The German Marshall Fund of the United States

National Network of Local Philanthropy Development completed its activities within the framework of a grant from The German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF). The total amount of the grant is 20 000 dollars. All events were held within the framework of the MedAid medical special fund. The network of philanthropists closed the grant reporting to the foundation.

Ukrainian cities were unprepared for the Russian attack on the section humanitarian reserves, especially with medicines, animal food, children's food, and diapers. Hospitals were not prepared enough for emergencies. Bomb shelters are not satisfied with international norms of provision and preparation for using them.

The situation is worse in small towns and villages. Small towns and villages in regions under fire meet people from cities. The load on local hospitals is growing, and they need more equipment and medicines to serve all patients. We conducted a little research among communities we worked with and created a list of medical needs.

The town of Berezan in the Kyiv region has a hemodialysis department. They serve about 19 patients, but the number of patients grew due to the shelling of Kyiv. During the active phase of the fight in the Kyiv region, the hospital has problems with electricity supply. So it can't provide regular service to locals and people who evacuated to the Berezan community. We organized an energy audit in project activities and determined the generator we needed. After, we did small market research, chose the supplier, and arranged local preparation works. In cofinancing with the Berezan community foundation, we bought that generator. Now, the hospital has the opportunity to turn on emergency electrification in 1 minute.

Second request we had from the Kharkiv prenatal hospital department for a list of medicines and some medical wear. We organized procurement from a Ukrainian pharmacy in the Poltava region; we found a local volunteer who managed delivery from Poltava to Kharkiv. Our Kharkiv community foundation passed humanitarian aid to the hospital.

The next project activity was in Vasylkiv, Kyiv region. In cooperation with the Vasylkiv community foundation, we selected two small power electrical generators to help hospitals electrify critical equipment. Procurement was organized with grant money and delivered with the resources of the local community foundation.

The last activity aimed to help older people with disabilities who stay in the department of inpatient stay for permanent or temporary residence of people with disabilities and elderly people located in the Berezan community.

Outputs are the following:

  • We equipped two hospitals with three electrical generators
  • Procured 48 names of medicines is 848 pcs
  • Raised 1395 USD as co-funding
  • Involved 7 partners
